Application Rates by Crop
The preferred use is as a soil application to prevent the deficiency although it may also be used as a foliar spray to provide correction when a soil application is impractical.
Strawberries
Soil / Drip: Starting at 2 lbs/acre as an in-season drench. Dissolve and apply through drip or as a soil drench timed to peak fruit set and sizing.
Foliar: 1 lb/acre at three stages — marble size, full size/green, and pink-to-red. Improves firmness, size, and shelf life.
Tomatoes & Peppers
Soil / Drip: Starting at 2 lbs/acre per season through drip, split into weekly or bi-weekly fertigation events. Soil application preferred for prevention when BER history is high.
Foliar: Starting at ¼ lb/acre per week before first fruit set. Use higher rates during rapid vegetative growth or when Blossom End Rot pressure is high. Continue through fruit fill.
Leafy Vegetables (Celery, Lettuce)
Soil / Drip: Starting at 2 lbs/acre per season through drip or overhead irrigation. Dissolve in a small volume first, then meter into the line.
Tree Fruits & Nuts
Soil / Drip: Starting at 2 lbs/acre per season, or 0.5 oz per inch of trunk diameter. For drip-irrigated orchards, split across 4–6 fertigation events from bloom through early fruit fill.
Foliar: Starting at ¼ lb/acre in sufficient water for full canopy coverage. Start at petal fall; repeat every 2–3 weeks during cell division.
Field & Row Crops
Soil / Pre-plant: Starting at 1 lb/acre incorporated pre-plant, mixed with nitrogen solution or pre-planting herbicide. For in-season fertigation through sprinkler or furrow, starting at 2 lbs/acre split across the season.
Foliar: Starting at ¼ lb/acre during rapid growth stages.
Blackberries & Raspberries
Soil / Drip: Starting at 2 lbs/acre per season, split across fertigation events from pre-bloom through fruit fill. Dissolve in a small volume of water first, then meter into drip lines.
Foliar: Starting at ¼ lb/acre per application beginning at pre-bloom, repeated every 14–21 days through harvest.
Hydroponics
Add to nutrient solution as needed to maintain target calcium levels. OAL CAL is compatible with phosphates and sulfates in solution — unlike calcium nitrate, it will not precipitate. Dissolve in a small volume of water first, then add to the reservoir.
Recognizing Calcium Deficiency
Calcium deficiency typically appears in the youngest tissue first — the plant cannot move calcium from old tissue to new growth.
Visual Symptoms
- Young leaves distorted, tips hooked back, margins curled
- Brown scorching or spotting at leaf margins
- Die-back of growing tips (especially tomato, celery)
- Blossom End Rot on tomatoes, peppers, squash
- Bitter Pit on apples and pears
- Tip burn on lettuce and strawberry
- Soft, easily bruised fruit with reduced shelf life
When It Appears
Calcium deficiency typically shows up during the rapid growth, flowering, and early fruiting stages — the periods of highest calcium demand. Even in soils with adequate calcium, plants often cannot absorb it fast enough during these windows.
Hot, dry conditions that reduce transpiration — or waterlogged conditions that slow root function — both reduce calcium uptake even when soil calcium levels are adequate. Apply OAL CAL preventively, not after symptoms appear.
Mixing Instructions
Preparation
- Fill tank ½ full with clean water
- Add the measured amount of OAL CAL powder slowly while agitating
- Stir or circulate until fully dissolved (typically 1–2 minutes)
- Add any other fertilizers or agrochemicals after OAL CAL has dissolved
- Top up to final volume and apply
With Ocean Agro Products
OAL CAL is compatible with Dirt M.D.® and KhushFul™. When combining products:
- Always dissolve OAL CAL first, then add Dirt M.D. or KhushFul
- Do not leave mixed solutions overnight
- Perform a small jar test before large tank mixes with unfamiliar products
